Windsock Craft

Hello. My name is Missy. I’m an artist and guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. Springtime brings with it many different types of weather. I bet you’ve noticed sunshine, snow, rain, clouds, and even hail recently. Here’s a craft that can utilize one type of weather: wind. 

Supplies

  • Recycled plastic water or soda bottle
     
  • Ruler
     
  • Scissors
     
  • Stapler
     
  • Liquid glue
     
  • Fabric (I use old leggings)
     
  • Yarn

Instructions

  1. With a grownup’s help, use scissors to cut the top and bottom off the plastic bottle. You’ll use this plastic tube as the base for your windsock.
  2. Cut two pieces of yarn about 12 inches long. You’ll use these to hang up your windsock. Staple the yarn to on end of the plastic tube in a criss-cross pattern.
  3. Cut your fabric into long strips at least 18” long and 1”-2” wide.
  4. Staple your strips to the bottom of the bottle.
  5. Use your bottle to measure how much fabric you will need to cover it entirely and use your scissors to cut.
  6. Glue the fabric around the bottle.
  7. Cut a second color of fabric to make your windsock more decorated. You could also add buttons or jewels or anything you like.
  8. Glue the decorations to your windsock, and let it dry.

Now you have your very own windsock! Hang it outside in a tree or from a pole. When the wind catches it, it will twirl and the long strips will flutter and fly. Have fun!
