As a parent of 3 small children, a constant question that runs through my mind is "how do I teach these young learners the most important lesson? What is the most important thing to teach them?" We have a lot of expectations for ourselves and it's hard to sift through the clutter to what is most important. But somehow, I seem to land on a similar theme over and over. Our ABC's and 123's are important to learn, yes. But ultimately, isn't practicing kindness the true measure of ultimate success?
PBS KIDS has responded in droves. Mister Rogers, Daniel Tiger and friends, Molly of Denali, Arthur, Sesame Street residents, Curious George, and many other beloved characters demonstrate kindness. What have you learned from them? How will you celebrate kindness this month and onward?

One way of being kind is to get to know someone different from you and listening to their stories. There are many different people in the world, with all different stories. Sesame says it best in the book we are different, we're the same, we're wonderful!
This month is Native American and Alaska Native Heritage month. Did you know there are over 573 different tribal nations recognized by the federal government? Each one is unique. Children's books are effective tools in facilitating conversations about kindness, about what it means to be different and what it means to be the same. Check out this list of 12 books drawn from the 2022 American Indian Youth Literature Award recipients.
In the meantime, get excited as PBS celebrates Native American and Alaska Heritage Month with Molly of Denali Season 3, debuting Monday November 7th. Additionally, a new Molly of Denali game will be released on November 10th.
