Hello! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. I remember going over to my cousin’s house when I was about 4 years old. It was the beginning of autumn, and my aunt made us homemade applesauce from apples she grew herself! My aunt and my mom helped my cousin and I create the silliest monster masks out of brown paper grocery bags. We would put them on and look at each other and laugh hysterically. I thought it would be fun to teach you how to make these silly paper bag monster masks.

Supplies: a paper grocery bag, colored construction paper, scissors, a pencil, and glue!

Supplies:

  • One brown paper grocery bag
  • Colored construction papers
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Glue

Glue your silly shapes onto the paper bag and let dry.

Instructions:

  1. Open the paper bag and put it over your head. Have an adult help mark where your eyes are. Take the bag off your head.
  2. Place the bag flat and draw a long rectangle for your eye hole.
  3. Use your scissors to cut out the rectangle.
  4. Draw tons of different shapes on the colored construction paper: triangles, circles, half circles, squares, rectangles.
  5. Use your scissors to cut out the shapes.
  6. Arrange the shapes on the bag to create a silly monster face.
  7. Use your glue to attach the shapes to the bag.
  8. Put your finished monster mask on and go look in the mirror.

Your silly paper bag monster mask is ready for action!

Wrap-up:

These monster masks are a great opportunity to experiment. Square eyes, tiny mouth, one eye, no eyes! Anything goes! Be creative in making your silly paper bag monster masks. And have fun!
