Howdy! My name is Missy, artist and guest blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. Today I am going to teach you how to make an awesome mixed-media art project. Mixed-media means using more than one type of art supply on a single artwork.
Supplies:
- 9”x12” watercolor paper
- A Ruler
- A Pencil
- Many different types of art supplies: markers, crayons, pastels, watercolor paint, craft paint, colored pencils, etc.
Instructions:
- Use your pencil and ruler to make marks every 3 inches across the top of your paper. Repeat along the bottom of the paper as well.
- Use your pencil and ruler to draw a straight line from the first mark on the top to the first mark on the bottom. Go across the paper drawing lines for the second marks, third marks, etc.
- Turn your paper ¼, and repeat steps 1 and 2. Now you will have twelve 3”x3” boxes on your paper.
- Take one of your art supplies, I started with craft paint, and create a circle that fills one of the boxes. Repeat with this same art supply but with a different color in a different box. Repeat a third time.
- Now choose a different art supply, I chose markers, and create three more circles in three different colors, in three different boxes.
- Repeat step 5, two more times, so that each of your twelve boxes has a circle in it.
- Let any paint dry.
- Pick a new art supply (or one you’ve already used) and create a smaller circle inside one of the circles. I used colored pencils next.
- Switch up art supplies and colors and draw these smaller circles in each of the twelve big circles.
- Choose a new art supply and create twelve more circles, smaller than all the rest, in the center of your circles. Three circles stacked up on top of each other in each 3”x3” box.
- Finally, fill in the space around the large circle in some of the boxes. Use any art supplies and colors you like. I filled every other box, and left the others white.
Now you have a gorgeous piece of Mixed-Media Circle Art. Did some art supplies work better to make layers with than others? Do some colors look better together than others? You can now hang your art on the refrigerator, in your bedroom, or put it in a frame. Have fun!
