Missy's Squeegee Art

Email share

Howdy! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. I like to experiment in my art with unconventional materials. This means using a tool or object in a manner that it was not designed to be used. Today I am going to teach you how to use a squeegee as a paintbrush!

  1. Lay out your scrap paper underneath your white copy/printer paper to protect your table.
  2. Squeeze out a blob of red paint, about the size of a dime, in the bottom left corner of your paper.
  3. Squeeze out a blob of orange paint to the right of the red paint.
  4. Squeeze out a blob of yellow paint to the right of the orange paint.
  5. Then green paint, then blue paint, then purple paint. It’s ok if the blobs touch each other.
  6. Now take your squeegee and swipe it through the paint in a small counter-clockwise half circle. You don’t need to use much pressure.
  7. Look what you made! It’s a rainbow!

Wrap Up

Practice making a few rainbows on a few sheets of paper. You can even switch up the colors and create your own rainbow. If you swipe the squeegee in a different manner, maybe a zig-zag instead of a half circle, you’ll get a completely different effect. Be creative and have fun.
