Hi, it's Missy, artist and blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah! Reading is one of my favorite things to do. I love books about real people. I love books about adventures. I love books about mysteries. Even as an adult, I’m not a fast reader and sometimes my eyes wander on the page. I have been known to point at the words with my finger at times. I thought it might be fun to make a special pointer for reading that can help me — and especially kids — focus on one word at a time. Read along to see how to craft your very own reading pointer!
Supplies:
- Popsicle sticks
- Glue
- Assorted crafting supplies: craft paint, paint brush, sequins, washi tape, etc
- Googly eyes
- Scrap paper or a recycled lid for a paint palette
Instructions:
- Squeeze some paint onto your palette, dip your brush in and start painting a popsicle stick.
- Add stripes or polka dots or zig-zags with another color of paint.
- Alternatively, you could wrap different washi tapes around your popsicle stick.
- Add sequins or more paint or any other embellishments you like.
- Glue a googly eye to one end of the popsicle stick.
- Let it dry.
Wrap-up:
Now you can choose a book to read! Use your reading pointer to point at each word as you read it. You will notice this helps with focusing on that word and that word only. Your awesome reading pointer might even make reading more enjoyable. Be creative and have fun!
