Missy's Rainbow Wabi Sabi Scroll

Email share

Howdy! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and a guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. An Instagram friend of mine has been making these beautiful scrolls she calls “Wabi Sabi Scrolls.” Wabi Sabi is a Japanese creative, aesthetic concept of embracing imperfection. Our art doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. I thought it would be fun to practice gluing, cutting and hand sewing by making a Rainbow Wabi Sabi scroll.

  1. Use your scissors to cut a strip of white fabric about 2” wide and 12” long.
  2. Glue all along the edges to keep them from fraying.
  3. While the glue is still wet, lay one stick on each of the ends in the glue.
  4. While the glue dries, sort your sewing notions and embellishments by color.
  5. With your scroll laying vertically, start gluing/sewing on the items in your red pile at the top.
  6. Now sew/glue on your pink items. Followed by orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, silver/gold, brown, white and black.
  7. Roll up the scroll and tie your ribbon around it.
