Missy's Marble Painting

Hello everyone! My name is Missy. I’m an artist/blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. I’m back this week with another arts and crafts project for you. When I was in first grade at Orchard Elementary in North Salt Lake, my Mom came to our class and taught an Art Start lesson. I believe the artist she focused on was Jackson Pollock, but I definitely remember the art project. She taught us how to marble paint! And I am going to teach you how to marble paint today.

Supplies

  • Shallow cardboard box (could also use a cake pan or a cookie sheet)
  • 3 colors of craft paints
  • 3 marbles (I actually couldn’t find marbles so I used round beads)
  • 3 spoons
  • 3 shallow paint dishes (could use small bowls or muffin tins)
  • Copy paper

Instructions

  1. Place your sheet of paper in your box.
  2. Squeeze paint into each of your paint dishes.
  3. Drop a marble into the first paint dish and move it around with a spoon until the marble is completely covered with paint.
  4. Pick up the paint covered marble with your first spoon and drop it onto your paper.
  5. Tilt the box carefully back and forth, side to side. This will make the marble roll across the paper leaving a trail of paint.
  6. Once all the paint has come off the marble, pick it back up with your first spoon and drop it back into the paint dish it came from.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 with each color of paint, using a different spoon for each color.
  8. When you have Marble Painted with each color, take a look at your work. Is it finished? If so, let it dry for a couple hours. If not, repeat each color again.

Wrap Up

What you have created is an abstract piece of art. It probably doesn’t look like anything in particular, not a person, not an airplane, etc. But it’s still beautiful, isn’t it? Does the painting make you feel anything? Does it look like a happy painting or an angry painting? Is it calm or is it wild? Have fun and be creative!
