Koi Fish Kites (Koinobori)

Hi everyone! My name is Missy, I’m an artist and blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. A few years ago, I traveled to Japan. I find Japanese culture very interesting and unique. In May, Japanese people celebrate a holiday called “Children’s Day.” On this holiday, children are honored for their personalities and their happiness. The people create koi fish kites, or koinobori, representing each member of their family. They fly these kites during their Children’s Day ceremonies. Since it is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I thought it would be fun to make some koinobori of our own.

Supplies

  • colored tissue paper
  • 3 toilet paper rolls (or paper towel rolls cut to size)
  • wooden stick (dowel, BBQ skewer or stick from a tree)
  • glue
  • scissors
  • string
  • 6 googly eyes
  • hole punch
  • circle punch (optional)

Instructions

  1. Use your hole punch to make two holes in the end of each toilet paper roll. Punch the holes opposite each other.
  2. Cut your string about 20 inches long. Make three of these.
  3. Tie the ends of the string through the holes you just punched. One string for each toilet paper roll.
  4. Cut tons and tons of one inch circles out of different colored tissue paper. A circle punch makes this easier, but isn’t necessary.
  5. Cut lots of strips of tissue paper in the same colors, about eight inches long and about half an inch wide.
  6. Glue the circles to the outside of the paper towel rolls. Start at the top (by the string) and overlap each one. This gives the effect of fish scales.
  7. Cover each paper towel roll completely with the small circles.
  8. Now glue the tissue paper strips to the bottom, just inside the rim of each toilet paper roll.
  9. Glue two googly eyes on each fish, about where you punched the holes.
  10. Now tie each string to the wooden stick, spaced a bit apart and leaving room for your hand to hold one end of the stick.

Wrap Up

Now you have your very own Koinoburi! You can take it outside and have your own parade for Children’s Day. If you have more people in your family than just three, you can make more fish to add to your kite. Be creative and have fun!

Here's what we have going on right now. Take a look!
