Hello friends! My name is Missy, and I’m an artist and blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. My friend knitted me a pair of socks. They fit my feet perfectly and are oh so comfy! I thought it would be a fun craft project to make our own socks and practice some sewing.
Supplies:
- 2 sheets of construction paper
- Markers
- Scissors
- Yarn
- Masking tape
- Pencil
- Hole punch
Instructions:
- Use your pencil to draw the outline of a big sock on one of your sheets of construction paper. Use the whole page.
- Use your scissors to cut out the sock shape.
- Lay that sock shape on the second sheet of construction paper and use your pencil to trace around the outside of the shape.
- Cut out the second sock shape. Now you have 2 matching sock shapes.
- Match the two sock shapes together and use your hole punch to make holes around the outside. Punch about 1 inch apart all the way around the sides of the sock, the toe and the bottom. Don’t punch holes across the top edge of the sock.
- Now use your markers to decorate your sock. You can draw designs like zig-zags or swirls, or you can draw pictures.
- Now use your scissors to cut about 3 feet of yarn.
- On one end of the yarn, wrap a piece of masking tape tightly around it. This will make it easier to thread through the holes.
- Start your sewing at the top of the sock. Thread your yarn up through the first hole (leaving a 6 inch tail), down through the next hole. Up through the next hole, down through the hole after that. And so on and so on until you go all the way around and end up at the top again (on the other side).
- Tie both ends of the yarn to secure it.
Wrap-up:
Look! You sewed your own comfy, cozy winter sock! Now you can use your construction paper and markers to fill the socks. You can draw candy and cookies and toys, anything you like. Be creative and have fun!
