From Missy: We're Going On A Bug Hunt

Email share

Hello there! It’s Missy, the blogger and artist, back again with a great springtime activity. I’ve been itching to get outside and soak up as much sun as possible. And guess who else is waking up and enjoying the sunshine? Bugs and insects! I thought it would be fun to go on a Bug Hunt!

Instructions

  1. Place your paper towel over the mouth of your Mason jar.
  2. Hold the paper towel down around the sides of the jar and screw on the band. Now the paper towel is the “lid” of the jar.
  3. Use your pencil to poke a few small breathing holes in the paper towel lid. This is your bug viewer.
  4. Now take your bug viewer outside. Search around your house for bugs. Search in sidewalk cracks, search under trees and bushes. My favorite place to find bugs is right where the sidewalk meets the grass. Pull the grass back carefully from the sidewalk and there are often little critters in the crack.
  5. Carefully pick up the bugs one at a time and put them in your bug viewer.
  6. Go inside and use crayons on your Bug Hunt page to draw the bug you found.
  7. Next to the drawing, you can write how many of that bug you saw.
  8. Go back outside and release your bug where you found it.
  9. Search for more bugs and add them to your Bug Hunt page.

Wrap Up

See how many different types of bugs you can find. Make sure to always be careful handling bugs and to ask a parent if they are safe to pick up. Always return the bugs to where you found them as quickly as possible. Bugs and insects are very important for our outdoor world. Be creative and have fun!
