Hi everyone! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and a guest blogger around here at PBS KIDS Utah. I was recently near a shallow pond and noticed tons of dragonflies zipping around. Up and down, back and forth. They are so beautiful with their see-through wings and metallic bodies. This experience inspired me to create this dragonfly craft.
Supplies:
- Clothespins
- Craft paint
- Paint brush
- Scrap paper (to use as paint palette and to protect table)
- Hot glue gun with glue (can also use liquid glue)
- Googly eyes
- Pipe cleaners
- Magnet* (optional)
Instructions:
- Choose a color of paint for your dragonfly and squeeze a bit onto your scrap paper.
- Dip the paint brush in that color and paint your clothespin. Paint all sides except the bottom, let it dry. Now paint the bottom and let it dry.
- Choose another color of craft paint and squeeze it out on your palette. Use this color to paint spots, stripes, zig-zags or whatever other design you can think of. Let it dry.
- Get the hot glue gun warming up. Have an adult help put two dots of glue near the pinching end of the clothespin. Place two googly eyes on those dots of glue.
- Now take a pipe cleaner and fold it in half, creasing the wire.
- Now fold each end of the pipe cleaner back to meet that middle crease.
- Squeeze a line of hot glue on the top of the clothespin where the metal comes across.
- Unfold the middle crease of the pipe cleaner and place it on that glue line. Now you have one wing on each side.
- Repeat steps 7 & 8, to create a second wing on each side.
Wrap-up:
Now you have your own little dragonfly clip! I like to use my dragonfly clips as chip clips. You could also glue a magnet to the back, and create magnetic clips for the refrigerator. You could hang other artwork from your clips. You can also play with the dragonfly clips. They are a fun little toy. Make as many as you’d like. Have fun!
