My name is Missy, and I’m an artist and blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. Painting is one of my favorite ways to create art. When we paint, we usually use a brush to create lines and shapes. Today, I am going to teach you a fun new technique for blow painting using a straw!

Supplies: Thick paper, watercolor paints, a paintbrush, water cup, and straw

Supplies:

  • Watercolor paper (or other thick paper)
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Straw
  • Cup filled with water
  • Googly eyes* (optional)
  • Marker* (optional)

Paint explodes into colorful fireworks with just a quick puff of air through the straw!

Instructions:

  1. Use your paint brush to drop some water into each color of paint you plan to use.
  2. Choose a color to start with and load your brush with paint.
  3. Drip a dot of paint on your paper. Put your paintbrush in the water cup.
  4. Now take your straw in your mouth and position it about 1” above the paint dot. Blow a quick burst of breath through the straw. This will “explode” the paint dot.
  5. Rinse your brush and choose a new color of paint.
  6. Repeat steps 2–5.
  7. Fill your paper with these paint “explosions.”

Ta-da! Paint explosions everywhere!

Wrap-up:

You will notice your paint colors mixing a bit, which is fun to watch! A page full of paint “explosions” kind of looks like fireworks! Another idea for these explosions is to put a single explosion on a small piece of paper. Then add googly eyes, and use a marker to draw a mouth and legs. Now you have a blow paint monster! Have fun!
