Most Utah locals know about Thanksgiving Point and its neighboring museums and attractions, but not many know about the 55-acre “oasis in the desert” located just 1 mile northwest of the Thanksgiving Point main campus.
This impressive display of seasonal flowers includes 15 various gardens all inspired by different places around the world, from the fragrance garden to the French-inspired Parterre garden. “We just try to be pretty,” says head gardener Latimer. And pretty they are.
Ashton Gardens was started by Alan and Karen Ashton in 2000. After Alan’s success with Corel Corporation’s Word Perfect Office, the couple wanted to give back to the community. Karen always found peace when gardening and being in nature, so Ashton Gardens was born.
Some of the best features, according to Master gardener Tony Latimer, include the newly added "I Am The Light Of The World" sculpture garden, as well as the largest manmade waterfall in the Western Hemisphere.
In addition to garden strolling, one can find a wealth of knowledge at Ashton Gardens. Master Gardening classes for adults and Jr. Master Gardening programs for children in grades 2 through 5 are held February through May. All classes are taught by highly knowledgeable master gardeners and Utah State University Extension Staff.
One-time DIY and Horticulture classes are also offered throughout the year. Some of these classes include seed harvesting, garden winterizing, terrarium making, and even beekeeping. Be sure to check their schedule for upcoming classes.
